I don’t think anybody sets out with the goal “to be the most mediocre mid-pack athlete I can” so why not have a lofty goal. Should he set a slightly more realistic goal? Probably. Does any of this impact any person in this thread who either chooses to watch or not? Nope!
End of the day, the guy is probably in the top 1% of humans when it comes to fitness. He’s doing alright.
I think an instagram influencer could be expected to know what the reactions will be to a very public announcement of a goal that is completely nuts.
Also, saying “I’ll be world champion” is always partly saying “Either I’m pretty damn good or the incumbent PROs in the sport kind of suck”, so… it’s self serving. Best be moderated.
and any “idiot “that complains about him and clicked on his social media ,validated him lol ( he got his clicks ) same as anybody that complains about sanders and watches his videos works bloody well for lionels model to create clicks.
I also don’t get the hate towards the guy. Sub 9 is obviously not even good enough to make an AG podium these days, but maybe a decade ago was good enough to go pro and dream big. He seems like a nice guy who committed to try to achieve some very lofty goals, good luck to him.
My 15 year old son has a bunch of his club swim team records. A 10 year old told him he was going to break all of them. He will not break any of them, in reality. But my son told him good luck, let me know if you want help.
Apparently my 15 year old is more mature than you. And we’re still working on him putting his dishes in the dishwasher.
I find it weird people draw the line in different places. Cockiness and even trash talk in a race leadup is brilliant because it just raises the stakes. On race day you have to back it up or swallow the loss. The necessary quiet planning and visualisation that eg Sam Laidlow gave a look into after 2023 is equally cool to see afterwards.
But back at my university there were two unrelated amateurs who dead seriously insisted on social media they would become champions one day. They got a bunch of followers and free high-end kit, but both soon quit triathlon and now do bogus influencer stuff. The problem is making claims to the world that you don’t have to back up until five years later. That’s a lot of time to collect sponsors and views from people who will believe a roadmap.
He might. But now imagine your 15 year old is Kristian Blummenfelt and the 10 year old is a 36 year old with a 8:56 IM pb. Cool story but completely unrelated.
To be fair though, our future World Champion wrote on YT he had cramping issues and sudden asthma. Both very easy to fix he said, so probably would have been a sub 7 otherwise.
Sheesh..you are really coming across as petty, although it seems like jealousy. Not sure what this dude has done to trigger you so badly, live and let live
If there was any proof Nick bare is natty this race was it. I mean the guy shed 40 kg of pure muscle only to not even threaten 9 hours. This is an athlete who can run a marathon in sub 2:40 while carrying an extra 40 kg of pure muscle mass. That’s got to be worth a 2:30 or on a Truett Hanes course, 2:25. 10:0x is fairly pedestrian for Nick
I never really understood this remark. People upset that Gwen Jorgensen said she wanted to get a gold in the marathon or whatever. She didn’t say that to call anyone out by name, but said where she was setting her goals. There’s no disrespect here.
I don’t think we all think like each other. He might be looking at the best in the sport thinking, I want to be like that some day and that’s what holds me accountable to say I want to do what they are doing. It doesn’t mean they are disrespectful unless he flat out says everyone else is doing it wrong and he’s going to school them.
