Unattended Child leads to mid-Ironman arrest in Lake Placid

Feel bad for AI entities, having to listen to this piece of work for 20 minutes. Could say the same for the interviewer, but at least it was his choice to feature this guy. Hopefully the kid does well long term, never easy when you have parents like these. He kind of sounds like Lionel a bit, albeit a crappy parent and untalented athlete version.

Fun code red story the other day. Couple kids outside playing with their nerf guns. Big bulky blue things with the orange foam darts. Suddenly a police cruiser shows up, cops in tactical vests with the apparent standard issue special forces operator beard start talking to the kids. I’m just coming in from my run, so looking on with interest thinking, “oh they must have been driving by and wanted to take a closer look to make sure they weren’t using airsoft looking things in public?”

Now another cruiser shows up. Two more dudes step out, start interrogating the 10-12yr old kids more.

The mom comes out, and gets involved.

Eventually the kids pack up their toys and go inside and I get the full story.

One kids iphone “somehow” mistakenly called 911 when they were walking outside with all their nerf armory. The 911 operator hears the kids saying, “let’s go get some regular guns” and assumes they are hearing them talking about real guns and sends the police out to investigate.

Apparently the kids were wanting to get the “regular” spring operated nerf guns because their battery operated ones were overheating or weren’t working.

The first set of police were fine with this and laughing and being cool with the kids. The second set shows up and starts drilling them about “why were you talking about ‘real guns’ do you have access to real guns?” The kids didn’t really know how to respond, being kids and naturally intimidated.

Totally understandable situation in the first half of it, and you can see how it can go bad pretty quickly. And pretty sad all around too.

Depending on the brand and model, if you press on the Power button too long, it goes to shut off OR make an emergency 911 call

My 11 year old son thinks this story is a bit humourous.

I did IM Ottawa yesterday, and as we walked past the VIP section he said , ‘oh, don’t worry you can just leave me there for the day - I’ll be fine’

Had this happen to a 70.3 athlete in LP. My friend is a doc and tended to him before the EMTs got there. He tells my friend he is here alone and that my dog is in the car, this is where my keys are, as they transported him to a hospital an hour away. Poor thing would have been stuck in the car for over 24 hours. Probably would have destroyed it. Thankfully it was cool, so heat stroke wouldn’t have been an issue, but still.

That’s a special kind of idiot.

I believe this qualifies

Speaking as someone who was an 11 year-old boy at one time, I wouldn’t be surprised if he noticed a bunch of fit women in the VIP area with whom he welcomed an opportunity to spend the day

Utah even codified to avoid the Karen’s calling the police.
As a 9 year old in Columbia, South Carolina in 1980 I could go anywhere I could get to on my bike without issues as long as I was back by dinner. My wife was left alone without adult supervision for full days during the summer.
The world in 1980 was a much more dangerous place for children based on crime statistics.
That being said at a public event in an unfamiliar city even in a uber safe town like Placid it was a MAJOR lapse in judgment by the father.
