Pros winning age group only races

Clearly you don’t understand keeping things light and basically just liking the guy’s comment . is it wrong now to agree with someone’s point? Tamara was is listed as the 35-39 AG winner . She is someone holding a pro license. She is not an age grouper. So according to the rules listed by Marquette she should not be listed as the 35-39 winner (and was standing on top the podium today, holding the tape up, etc).

That is totally on the race director. Have you contacted the race organizers to have her result nullified?

nope I wasn’t in the race at all. Just saw them pop up after saw multiple posts from people I follow announcing her victory

I don’t think it’s totally on the RD. You as a pro would have to do your due dilligence to communicate with the RD/race that you need to be culled out of the results and/or not listed as an “AG” athlete, etc. I would say that’s even more important because the registration is automatically going to assume your an AG athlete in an “only” event.

Now I should also add, CAN elite rules may be different, but if this was USAT elite athlete, the actions from today would be in clear violation of the elite license. Said athlete in this case even took part in the awards winning recognition. That’s not on the RD, that’s on the athlete. Again it may not be an violation of CAN elite license rules. If she was an American she would be.

So yes as I said way upthread, there may be a clerical adjustments the race/RD can to, but there is also the professional themselves having to follow the guidelines to ensure they aren’t also in violation. Participating in the awards ceremony if it’s an AG only race, would be a pretty easy thing to skip. But again CAN elite license holders may not have the same parameters that other elite license holders have to follow. But my guess is that for the most part, many federations have very similiar guidelines for elite/AG classifications.

yes agree with that as well. That would be the “professional” thing to do

Are there any other sports in the world where this is a thing? It certainly doesn’t apply to any sports I’m aware of. The age groups are entirely made up as is and just seem like a way to give out participation trophies. If you want to win a race you better be the fastest person at the start line.

Have you ever heard of marathon?

I race ironman and 70.3 for agegroup win, and do find it frustrating when this happens. Not because i don’t like the reality check. But mainly because as an agegrouper you’re not allowed to race pro’s.

I’ve had a few races where i ran right into the pro field. Left me wondering ‘what if they didn’t start 10min before me’.

I’m not pretending to be pro because i work full-time so i’m not taking a pro license. But i do think it’s stupid ironman makes the pro race a seperate race.

I have, but I’ve never heard of age group awards in marathons. I’ve also never heard any runner claim they won something if they didn’t take the tape.

What about Boston…?

" Age group awards will be given to the top 3 finishers in the men’s and women’s divisions for each age group"

Fair enough. Do you think any of those people say they won the race? I can’t imagine those people are complaining about the Kenyans being 30m ahead of them saying they shouldn’t be allowed to race.

Are the Kenyan pros competing in the age groups…?

And no one says they won the race, they say they won ‘their age group’…

Why are people so eager to argue that they continually fail to take the time to comprehend what is being said. No one is saying they shouldn’t be allowed to race, they are saying pros shouldn’t claim age group victories…

Even worse when they take Kona slots from AG athletes - that´s beat me up more than a dusin times…

Or “former” pros racing AG.

Or the whole Jalabert & Vinokurov polemic…

Doped athletes is the only issue there.

We have a local sprint series and our resident pro will often show up and win - it’s all good. He’s a super positive influence on the local tri community, very friendly, and is adding more to the sport. We have an Open wave so it’s not taking away from the AG awards. I also think there are incentives in his sponsorship contracts for wins, even local wins. Those little bonuses add up and allow for the travel to the larger pro IM races. With most things, if you’re a nice person, it shouldn’t be an issue.

I was 4th, he was 3rd in my AG at 70.3 Worlds in 2011.

Bummer - he took your podium spot…

I raced him in Kona, where he several times took somebody´s podium

Remember Sam Gyde? Is he still racing - kudos for that action!

I do, he’s not. He stopped a while ago, still very active, he pops up on my socials sometimes.

Again no issue there in that case. But this was different. First there was no open wave just included in age group results, and two despite smaller numbers this wasn’t exactly your local sprint triathlon. It was a Challenge 70.3 race. Yes it’s not like an Ironman 70.3 regional championship or something but it is definitely a step above a local sprint tri .

Exactly what I have been saying. Right now both pros who raced in Quebec are listed as the Age group winners and both got up on the top step of podium at end of the day.
